very prescient, my friend, for i, just recently re-addressed Glengarry via the film, which is STILL valid and stands up quite WELL! there's something in the air. a few years ago, i read Mamet's one actual novel, Chicago, and did not enjoy it very much. of course, it would make a great play or a movie, but too jumbled to be a novel (similar to what i think about james ellroy's later works - see: White Noise, et al). i have really not seen many plays, live. but, you were lucky to catch that particular production!! savor that, like duck butter. xxxcm

Glengarry was, and I daresay shall remain, his high water mark. In my humble opinion. I’ve not enjoyed everything he’s done, that’s for sure. I can say that about every artist whose work has enriched me. And let’s not even get into his conversion from ardent lefty to extreme conservative in the last couple decades. A striking reversal. Regardless, the work speaks for itself. It’s the best play I’ve ever seen. It will be interesting to see if these hotshots can deliver the material as effectively.

I've always liked the film with Al Pacino and Jack Lemon. There was some great acting there. Alec Baldwin is flat-out hilarious. LOL. It definitely kept me guessing until the end and my dad was in real estate for decades and definitely agreed with the predatory nature in the industry. Excellent post, Robert.

Thanks so much, Parker!

Indeed the film is a great adaptation. Interestingly, Alec Baldwin's unforgettable role is not in the play. It was added to heighten the audience's understanding of the stakes.

I've seen the play numerous times, including that original cast from the '80s and like you, it had a transformative effect on me. As a woman just starting out in the tough NY work world, it was the cursing and womanizing and misogyny that was spot-on. It made me more of a guy-like woman in order to succeed. I'm glad those days are over and I can now just write about them!

A real gift for a fatherless boy, I’d say. Showed you what you’d won, rather than lost.

Word on the street is an all-female cast will replace this one!

My Pops was Also unkown to me as You know. Keep in mind these were men of their times raised by men of their times. Perhaps flawed by today's standards but I believe,in my case at least, doing the best they could with what they had. I know this. My son grew up with a dad that raised him how he imagined he would have been raised if his dad was present. Very proud of the man my son became. It may have gone differently if his grandpa was around. Kinda glad he wasn't. Can't risk the result of just me.

Make sense?
